Dr. Coats' Legacy
Remembering the visionary who transformed public education
Dr. William Coats
Founder & Visionary (1945-2019)
Dr. William Coats was a pioneering educator who believed that every child deserves access to an excellent education, regardless of their zip code or family income.
"We don't believe in limiting what children can achieve. We believe in giving them the tools, the support, and the encouragement to reach heights they never imagined possible."
Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Coats dedicated his career to education, earning his doctorate in Educational Leadership and spending decades working in both traditional public schools and the emerging charter school movement.
In 1996, Dr. Coats founded The Leona Group with a simple but revolutionary idea: public charter schools could combine the accountability and accessibility of public education with the personalized attention typically found only in private schools.
A Different Kind of School
Dr. Coats was frustrated by what he saw in many traditional schools: overcrowded classrooms, one-size-fits-all curricula, and a lack of accountability. He envisioned schools where:
- Class sizes would be small enough for teachers to know every student by name
- Curriculum would be rigorous but adaptable to individual learning styles
- Parents would be true partners in their children's education
- Schools would be held accountable for results, not just intentions
- Every child would be challenged to reach their full potential
Building an Organization
What started as a single school in Michigan grew under Dr. Coats' leadership into a network of schools serving thousands of students across multiple states. He was deeply involved in every aspect of the organization, from curriculum development to teacher training to school design.
Dr. Coats was known for his hands-on approach. He regularly visited schools, knew many students and families by name, and was always accessible to teachers and staff. He believed that leadership meant service, and he led by example.
The Coats Philosophy
Principles that continue to guide our work today
Every Child Can Learn
Dr. Coats rejected the notion that some children are destined to fail. He believed that with the right support, encouragement, and high expectations, every student can achieve academic success.
Small is Powerful
He understood that learning happens best in environments where students are known and valued as individuals. Small campus sizes aren't a luxury—they're a necessity for effective education.
Parents are Partners
Dr. Coats saw families as essential partners in education, not obstacles to overcome. Schools should welcome parents, communicate openly, and involve families in meaningful ways.
Results Matter
Good intentions aren't enough. Schools must be accountable for student outcomes and continuously improve. Dr. Coats embraced data-driven decision making long before it was fashionable.
Character Counts
Academic excellence is essential, but it's not sufficient. Schools must also develop students' character, teaching values like integrity, perseverance, and respect for others.
Innovation is Essential
Education can't stand still. Dr. Coats encouraged experimentation, embraced new technologies, and was always looking for better ways to serve students and families.
A Living Legacy
Dr. Coats passed away in 2019, but his vision lives on in every Leona Group school.
"The best way to honor Dr. Coats' memory is to keep doing the work.
— Leona Group Executive Team
